Villa Vorénia Horizon

The main house holds the living room and its fireplace, the fully equipped kitchen and dining table, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The independent suite beside it has its own bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and private terrace. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms in total, with the pool, the covered BBQ and the shaded outdoor table shared between them.

The Story Behind

Long before the name Vorénia, there was a small metochi high on this slope. My great-grandfather built it by hand-stone walls, a roof of cane, nothing more than he needed. His own house stood ten kilometres down the mountain, so this is where he stayed when he came up for the sheep, the land and the olives.

His grandchildren grew up around it, my father among them. In 2005 he built a new metochi on the same idea: a little larger, a little easier, the same thought behind it. For fifteen years it was simply ours, long tables, weddings, christenings, ordinary Sundays.

The name is older than all of it. His grandfather called this stretch of mountain Vornós Gialós, for the north wind and the sea in winter and the hard sun in summer. In 2020 we began the work that turned it into Vorénia.

Location

Vorénia Horizon stands high in the mountains above Kastri Viannou, on the southern side of Crete, on ground the family has worked for generations. Olive groves and open hillside surround the property, and from the terraces the land falls away towards the Libyan Sea. Agios Ioannis and Faskomilia lie about 2.5 km down the road; below them the coast at Keratokambos and Kastri, and behind, the Portela gorge carrying the water of the Ano Viannos basin down to the sea. It is a quiet part of the island, well away from the busier resorts, and much of its appeal is simply how much space there is around you.

Around the Villa

At Vorénia Horizon most of the day tends to stay on the property the pool, the covered BBQ, the long table under the shade, the play area and the volleyball court. Beyond the gate the mountain opens into gorges, river beds and walking routes, with small villages nearby and the beaches of the south coast a drive down from the ridge.
